About this project
We file public records requests, publish everything that comes back, and show our arithmetic. That is the whole method. It is not glamorous and it is very hard to argue with.
How we source every claim
Four rules, applied to every page on this site:
- Every factual claim links to a primary document or a named outlet. If we cannot show you where something came from, it does not go up.
- Documented, promised and unanswered stay visually separate. A press release is not a contract and a contract is not a receipt. Blurring the three is how the public gets misled, whichever direction the blurring runs.
- We do not allege crimes. Publishing a tax agreement, a donation, and the dates they were signed is reporting. Asserting that those facts add up to bribery is an accusation, and we are not in a position to make it. We show the record and let readers, reporters, auditors and prosecutors do their own work.
- We publish what cuts against us too. When a records request comes back showing nothing, we publish that as prominently as one that shows something.
Reading the water bills, we nearly attributed another company's consumption to xAI — most of the bills in the largest production belong to GXO Supply Chain Inc, not MZX Tech. We caught it by checking the customer name on every page. The correction is published on the water page rather than quietly fixed, because you should be able to see how careful we are being.
The Safe and Sound Coalition
The documents on this site exist because Southaven residents asked for them. The Safe and Sound Coalition is the local grassroots nonprofit — covering Southaven, Horn Lake and Memphis — campaigning on the plant's air quality, noise and permitting, under the banner “Safe neighborhoods. Transparent leadership. Sound decisions.”
They filed the records requests that produced the City's productions. The Move Weight Foundation is publishing and indexing that material so it is permanent, searchable and citable, and filing follow-on requests to the County and the State. They organise; we do paperwork. If you live in Southaven, start with them.
Anonymous submissions
People send us documents. Sometimes those people work for the government that produced them. We treat the identity of anyone who sends us material as confidential by default, and we do not publish it — not in a document, not in a filename, not in metadata.
When we publish a record obtained by someone else, the Move Weight Foundation stands as the publisher of record. That is what a foundation is for. The tip line explains exactly what we log and what we do not →
How we are funded
The Move Weight Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This chapter takes no money from the City of Southaven, DeSoto County, the State of Mississippi, xAI, MZX Tech, LLC, or anyone with business before them.
Records requests cost money — copying fees, certified mail, postage, and occasionally a fee dispute. Small recurring donations are what keep requests going out.

A dedicated Mississippi campaign is being set up. Until it is live, we deliberately do not point a donate button at the Foundation's existing campaign, which is titled “Fund Public Records Access in Miami OK” — sending a Southaven donor there would misstate what they were funding.
